Photo blog 2026
This is my current 2026 blog page. For archives of past years, please follow the links below.
For the past 12 tears I have been keeping this photo blog as a sort of diary of everything we did and saw in Wyoming. However, this year we moved to northern Colorado. Between buying a house there and trying to sell the house in Wyoming, we did not do much exploring. Because of this, there has been a noticible drop in both quantity and quality of photos, frequently using a point and shoot camera and smart phone. Still, it documents some of the things we have done in our new state.
04/10/2026: We got word that some birders found a Northern Pygmy Owl at one of the many Natural Areas set aside here. I took a while but we finally spotted one of the smallest owls. Despite its size, it is known as a fierce predator. Just look at that facial expression!
Fascinatingly, it has fake eyes on the back of its head to confuse its prey and other predators.
5/4/2026: We joined the local museum of arts newly formed photography club. One of the first assignments was to bring your camera with you where you would normally not think to bring it. I brought my camera to the local recycling center while getting rid of a lot of moving boxes. There are art displays all around town and even in unexpected locations. This was the final result of that month’s homework, a sculpture at the recycling center.
5/11/2026: Took a drive to Lost Gulch Overlook for some Rocky Mountain views.
5/23/2026: There are some 48 Natural Areas set aside even in town and we started to explore a few of them and go birding. Here are a few that we saw. The Broad-winged Hawk is rare here.
5/28/2026: We have a very tiny back yard that is partially xeriscaped. Here is a very large Prickly Pear cactus that was blooming profusely shortly after we moved in.
7/8/2026: The bank of mailboxes for our subdivision is only a half block away in a small park. When getting our mail today, I was shocked to hear Bushtits. They move from tree to tree in small flocks and are very tiny, fast moving birds. I ran home to get my camera and was lucky they were still there when I got back. I only got one shot before they moved on.
7/10/2026: Went to another of the Natural Areas attempting to document an Indigo Bunting seen by other birders and was likely nesting here. eBird flagged it as rare and doesn’t confirm these reports without photographic proof. We did find it and Katherine was able to get a VERY long distance shot of it. The rest of the photos that day were taken by Candy.
8/6/2026: Besides having sculptures all over town, in the summer there are dazzling displys of flowers everywhere you look. These photos were taken in Old Firehouse Alley during one of our photo club’s Photo Walks.
This is actually an etched window pane backlit by the light from the pub within.
Paintings also cover every type of electrical or service box in town. This is a closeup of one depicting a Burrowing Owl.
8/21/2026: Today we went to see the beautiful Old Town Square in summer. Whenever we walk around here, I don’t believe we ever see a single wilted flower. Another artsy thing done here is people donate upright pianos to the town’s “Pianos About Town” art and music program. One can then watch local artists paint the pianos outdoors. Then they are placed around the town for anyone to stop and play! There is also an outdoor stage for live music in the square.
9/8/2026: Did a scouting trip to check out a campground by Brainard Lake for next year. The drought is quite severe in Colorado as you can see in the photo. We did have fun watching several American Dippers in the outflow South Saint Vrain Creek.
9/10/2026: For this month’s photo club assignment, we each drew lots for a color to highlight and mine was green. I shot this macro photo of a leaf on the plum tree in our yard backlight by the morning sun.
9/29/2026: Took a short trip to Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park to check out the fall colors.
10/6/2026: Took this one at City Park during our October photo walk with the club.
